Vinyl flooring gives you a wood or stone look that shrugs off spills, mopping and busy feet. That makes it a favourite for kitchens, bathrooms, rentals, shops and offices across South Africa. It comes as click-together rigid planks, glue-down planks and tiles, and rolled sheet, each with its own subfloor needs and price. Send one request and local vinyl suppliers and fitters quote you directly for the product and the fitting. It is free, with no obligation to accept any quote.
Click, glue-down or sheet vinyl
The three main types suit different jobs:
- Rigid core click planks: stiff boards that float over the slab and hide small imperfections. A good all-rounder for homes and rentals.
- Glue-down planks and tiles: thinner and fixed with adhesive, so they feel firm underfoot and suit shops, offices and heavy trolley traffic. The slab must be very flat.
- Sheet vinyl: a roll laid with few joins, useful for wet rooms, clinics and school corridors.
Look at the wear layer thickness, which matters more than the pattern for how long the floor lasts.
Subfloor and moisture checks
Vinyl copies whatever is beneath it. A bump or a hollow in the slab will show through, and glue-down vinyl needs a smooth, clean, dry screed. Fitters test moisture with a meter and may skim the slab with a levelling compound first. On a new build, wait for the screed to cure. Old timber floors usually need a hardboard or ply layer over them before vinyl goes down. Vinyl is also a good partner for wood-look floor tiles in wet areas of the same home.
What affects the quote
Vinyl costs about R300 to R700 per m² to buy and about R500 to R800 per m² supplied and fitted. The final figure depends on the product grade, the glue or underlay, and the prep work, like removing old carpet or levelling. Cut-up rooms, stairs and many door thresholds raise labour. Ask each supplier to quote the same plank size, thickness and wear layer, and to name what is included, so the totals can be compared fairly.
Care and what to avoid
Sweep or vacuum grit, which scratches the surface, and mop with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner. Skip steam mops and harsh solvents. Rubber backing on mats can stain vinyl, so use mats made for it. Fit felt pads under furniture and check for direct sun through glass doors, which can warp thin planks. If you prefer a real timber surface, compare it with laminate flooring before you decide.
